Air Brush Tan

On a whim I got an air brush tan the afternoon before going to Kauai. Here is what I learned from the process. First, prepare your skin: exfoliate and shave before you come. In addition, do not add any lotions to your skin. Second, come in old clothes (even braless if you can). The stain will rub off when first applied. (It does wash out.) Third, plan on not showering for about 12 hours and then just with water at first. (I watered my plants shortly after the spray tan and got a drip mark on my leg--it did fade). Forth, when you shower the first time, do not be alarmed that lots of brown tan goes down the drain, you'll still have a tan. Fifth, the tan will last about 4 days, so if you are going on vacation you're natural tan should kick in by then if you get out into the sun. Sixth, buy the tan extender to keep the air brush tan skin moist. Last, be aware that rubbing will wear off the tan. I went hiking with sock and boots and guess what--the tan wore off from ankles down.

Was it worth it? YES. I loved wearing all my resort clothes with this great tan. I saved my skin from lots of sun damage. It was not the expensive either. I may occasionally just have my legs done to cover all the blotchy spots I have.

Healthy Skin and Your Diet

I recently attended a talk by Dr. Jessica Wu, M.D., a very stylish and attractive dermatologist, who wrote the book, "Feed Your Face". I was very impressed by the information she imparted that did not involve invasive procedures. She recommended certain low cost over the counter products and changes in your diet in achieve more radiant healthy skin. Naturally I bought her book. It covers all the areas of concern from acne to aging skin, plus hair and nail health. Did you know that the lycopene in tomatoes can help prevent sunburn and UV radiation damage? Dr. Wu writes in such a personal style that you feel like your best girlfriend, who just happens to be a dermatologist, is giving you some woman to woman advise. The book is very organized and formatted with tip boxes, case studies, chapter summaries. I highly recommend it.

Hanger Tip

Whenever I do a closet audit, I always check out the type of hangers men and women use. I tell clients to toss or recycle the wire hangers from the dry cleaners. Jackets especially will loss their shoulder contours. Heavier woolen jackets should be on cedar hangers and blouses / shirts on sturdy plastic hangers. Most sweaters unless they are very light weight should not be hung as they will stretch or "grow" on a hanger. Occasionally I use the padded fabric hangers for thin delicate sweaters, but the hanger thickness takes up room when space is limited. I am not a fan of layered skirt hangers as it is hard to see exactly what you have in your wardrobe.

My favorite inexpensive trick for tops that slide off hangers is to put few inches of weather stripping on each end. You can buy it at any hardware store. It's called sponge rubber tape. It has an adhesive backing and is easy to cut with a pair of scissors. This wide scoop top (which slips off hangers) is from A'Nue Ligne and comes in multiple colors. I have five in assorted colors as they are the perfect under pinning piece. A'Nue Ligne has other styles also. They are washable and made in the USA.

Spring Fashion Trends

This lightweight jacket called Spotlight is one of my favorites in the Carlisle Spring Collection 2011 for several reasons. First of all, it reflects two important trends: the trench coat and polka dots. This is a purely fashionista trench: it wraps with a sash belt, has a shirred collar for drama, and has 3/4 length sleeves. Every New Year we all resolve to watch our diets and exercise more. In the mean time, you may not be able to fit into some of your favorite clothes. This is when shape wear really comes in handy. Here are some other tips while working on losing those extra pounds. Does your bra give you the lift you need?. A poorly fitted bra can make you look much heavier than you are. Adjust the straps or if your bra has lost its elasticity toss it. Draw attention to the center (vs. sides) of your waist with an interesting belt buckle. Watch your posture: just raising your rib cage takes off inches. A column of monochromatic color works wonders, but try another color besides black. A great fashion coat that conceals yet makes a statement and is an excellent addition to a January/February wardrobe.

Airplane Attire

I recently traveled on a long distance flight to a foreign country. I always want to look somewhat fashionable, yet be comfortable. I like pants with stretch. My favorite is a pair of pants with large front zip patch pockets. I can travel without a purse, as my passport or other ID, boarding pass, lip gloss, eye mask, sleeping pill....all except my reading material is on my body and easy to access. Once items go into the overhead it can be a problem retrieving if your seat mate is asleep.

Another favorite item on a long flight is a large warm pashima shawl that can serve as a blanket on the flight and extra layer for warmth on the trip. Even if the flight provides blankets they are often very thin. Additionally I usually wear a light weight cardigan, that will also be a basic layer with all I packed. The pashima can cover your legs, arms or wrap as shown around your neck.

If I am only traveling with a small carry-on suitcase, the outer pocket has items that would usually go in a purse. Then my empty flat style purse is packed inside the case. It's a matter of having one less item to carry-on. If I checked a bag, then I might have a zipped tote with reading material, my camera, itinerary, glasses or any other items I do not want to chance being without if my luggage is lost or delayed.

Also I rarely wear tennis shoes on a flight. It is just not very stylish, and there are lots of other comfortable attractive shoes that look classier. I see lots of travelers in athletic shoes and jeans though. Slip on shoes perhaps with rubber soles are also easier when going through security.

Alterations That Add Extra Polish

As an image consultant I can not stress enough how important proper alterations are. Several women of various figure types might all wear basically a size 8. Yet possibly only one will be so lucky as to have an "off the rack" garment fit perfectly. So do not pass up an outfit that otherwise suits you without considering what can be altered for perhaps $20-40.

The length of the pants, skirt or sleeve is usually a simple alteration. A slim pant should end at about the ankle, as seen in the left photo. Classic trousers should be hemmed to just the top on the heel. Wide pants should cover about half the heel. A skirt length that flatters most legs ends where your leg curves in, which for most women is just below the knee cap. Personal preference also enters in. The tall Per Se models above look youthful in the shorter length. Sleeves should just cover your wrist bone, unless they are 3/4 length which should be about the middle of the lower arm.

Most well made garments can be let out in the waist. Conversely the waist band can also be taken in. If you have curves and want to show them off, have your alterations person nip the jacket in on the side and center back seams. Be sure the jacket still falls over hips without bunching up in back.

Women with large busts or broad backs often avoid sizing up because the shoulders and even the upper arms can get too over sized. A good tailor can adjust the shoulders and arms on a larger size, though this is a more expensive alteration.

Do the side pockets on a pant, skirt or dress bulge out making you look extra hippy? Then have them sewn down. Dresses are the hardest to buy without some tweaking. Buy a dress to fit your widest area: your hips or your bust. Then have the rest altered. If you are short waisted and the dress has a set waist, then you can have the waist shorted. If there is enough fabric a long waisted figure type could have the waist lengthened.

Find a good alterations person who can make you look perfectly tailored. It will add that extra polish that shows you pay attention to detail.

Overdoing Black in Your Wardrobe

I recently did I style analysis and wardrobe audit for a woman who works in a conservative financial company. Her wardrobe was predominately black. While this is certainly a great color for the conservative environment that she worked it, it was not actually best color for her individual coloring. With her warm skin and hair color I advised her to add tops and even scarves to wear under her jackets with touches of colors like coral, aqua, warm red, yellow, apple green, camel and beige. Wearing warm toned jewelry such as a gold chain, warm toned pearls, and stones in earth tones would also lessen the effect of black next to face. Note how the blond pictured here in a Carlisle jacquard black suit has a scoop necked top under her jacket allowing her skin to show and a gold toned necklace to accent her hair color.

Personally, I also have a warm Spring's coloring. When I wear black I never have it near my neck. I wear a darker eyeliner and deeper eye shadow. In addition I usually wear a soft red lipstick and deeper shade of blush. Without intensifying my usual makeup I look washed out in black.

So while black is such a basic neutral in many women's wardrobes, it may not be your best neutral. You may want to consider navy blue or chocolate brown as a base for mix n matching.

Fall Fashion Trends

The Carlisle and Per Se Fall Collections are now being shown across the nation through private trunk shows. My show in La Canada, California began July 30 and goes through August 18. Then in October I will show again and add the winter collections. It is always exciting to see what our designers have created for the new season. Again they have again taken the current trends from the runways and created wearable yet remarkable garments.

So here are some of the trends. Plaids have an updated look. The plaid jacket here also shows the continued interest in sleeve details. Another trend is long sweaters that work like jackets and are so comfortable. Leathers are very unique like their black leather jacket with a large fringed collar. Skinny pants and leggings are still going forward, but all widths are fashionable. Pick the width that works for your figure type. Most amazing in the Carlisle Collection are the details and hours of hand work needed to create pieces that are works of art. One suede skirt has punch holes through which leather strips are woven to create a plaid pattern. It takes 10 hours to lace one skirt!

Summer Whites

Nothing says summer like white. This turquoise Carlisle sweater just "pops" when paired with white, as do all bright colors. White does require some extra care though.

One of the complaints I often get is keeping summer whites from turning yellow or taking on a dull gray hue. I called Scott Bell, owner of Bryan's Cleaners, and my dry cleaner for decades. The best advice is to remember to clean frequently. Body oils, perspiration, unseen splatters of white wine or other unnoticed foods or sprays absorb into the fabric. The longer they stay in the fabric the harder to remove them.

When you clean your washable clothing note that regular bleach can turn some white fabrics yellow. Look for natural oxygen safe bleach, usually found in health stores. Borax or washing soda will also brighten whites, as will sunlight for cottons especially. Really hard water can turn garments that dull gray color, so use vinegar in the rinse cycle.

Makeover for Executive Level Interview

Shirley was selected by McDermott and Bull Executive Search for a makeover by Corporate Icon. As a member of the team I helped Shirley with her wardrobe and accessories. Patsy Cisneros coached Shirley on her body language. Michele Hardy was brought in for hair and makeup. Shirley needed to step up the quality of her attire to reflect the director level position she was interviewing for. I selected a suit with some texture and updated 3/4 sleeves, as opposed to more traditional brasers which just looked simply boring

on her. The necklace was an appropriate size or her small frame and added that extra polish.

Executive Makeover

Through McDermitt and Bull Executive Network I was introduced to Jonathan . He needed an executive "touch up" after a weight change. Jonathan is 6'3" and tayloring was a key component in giving this well constructed dark gray suit made of quality designer fabric, the sense of confidence he needed to project. With a wide neck and long torso, he needed extra long ties. As the selection of long ties was not vast, we looked for three ties first, then three shirts that would send three different messages. Photographed here is his most powerful look for presentations and a new head shot which he needed.

Other shirt-tie combinations took the suit from networking events to more formal social events.

Every suit should have at least five combinations. Often it's a good idea to photograph your combinations in case you can not remember what tie you intended to wear with a particular shirt. Also after acquiring a new shirt or tie "play" with the other combinations you may be able to make with your existing wardrobe. Photograph these also, so that when you are in a hurry you can refer to the photos for possible combinations.

Keeping Up Appearances

I am preparing for a trip to France and recently read a book, "Almost French" by Sarah Turnbull. The author who is from Australia writes about her cultural adjustments during her first years of living in France. In one section she writes about her boyfriend's shock that she was going out in the morning to get croissants in her baggy sweatpants. He thought that the baker would not be very happy to have her in his shop dressed sloppily. In other words her appearance downgraded the quality of his store. Most likely he would want to ignore her and wait on others. It really tickled me. I am one of those people who really likes to dress nice even when running errands. For instance today I have a nice top, skirt and sandals on with a necklace and bracelet. I just feel better when out and about. I do get better service. Plus I never have to be embarrassed if I run into a friend or business associate.

Fashion Show at Sheraton Universal

May 10 I helped put on a fashion show for St. Joseph's Medical Center Benefit. The theme was Kentucky Derby Day, so lots of the women wore hats including me. The fashion producer, Lucienda Meidema, did a great job with the CARLISLE fashions. The opening scene was done to the music of "Ascot Opening Day" from "My Fair Lady" with the models in five CARLISLE black and white outfits and hats striking poses to the music.

While the little black dress is always safe at a cocktail party, sometimes you want to stand out from the crowd. My client, Lisa Johnson Mandell, frequently attends entertainment industry events. Shoe Organization Tip

My friend, Janie, amazed me with this shoe identification method. She has photographed her wonderful collection of shoes, then printed the photo and attached it to the end of a clear shoe box. This sure beats my black marker ID method with words like "silver heels". The shoes boxes pictured here are on an upper shelf in her closet. Her more frequently worn shoes were on an easy to reach shoe rack and casual flat sandals were lined up in rows inside a basket with the toe end pointing up on the bottom of her closet.

Wardrobe Planning Math

When I give corporate presentations and discuss wardrobe planning, I often suggest that you do some math. If you live in a warm climate like Southern California, and you were building a jacket or suit wardrobe you would need mainly transitional weight garments. That is, fabrics that can be worn most of the year. Therefore if you had 5 jackets, 3 should be transitional, 1 should be for cool weather, and 1 for hot weather. That's a proportion of 3:1:1. This formula would change according to the climate you live in. It should also help when you are doing a closet audit and deciding what to eliminate or add.

The jacket illustrated is a good transitional piece. With a white scoop neck tank, white pants and open toe shoes, it would be a great summer look. With a navy turtleneck, navy skirt, tights and boots, it would now be a great winter look. As pictured here with the navy pants or with a navy skirt and pumps instead of sandals, it's a perfect year round business look.

What to Wear at a Job Interview

The photo here shows a very feminine business suit with it's belted waist, the scoop neckline and 3/4 length sleeves. Minus the fashion gloves, could it work for an interview? Well that depends on the company's culture and the position you are applying for. If the company was very conservative with men in suits this would work with pumps and conservative earrings. Dangling earrings would distract. Perhaps the hair might be pulled back.

If the company was more polished business casual, the jacket belted with black classic pants would be less formal. At a very informal company you could wear the skirt with a black cardigan set. If the company was in the artistic field, the jacket with a wide belt, slim cut pants and fashion heels might be the look. Regardless you need to research the company culture and dress code before going to an interview.

5 Tips for Looking Slim Instantly

At this time of the year it seems everyone is dealing with those extra pounds. While dieting or thinking about dieting here are some tips to help you feel and look slimmer.

1. Watch your posture. It can be as simple as lifting your rib cage.

2. Avoid wearing tight clothes. They will only emphasis your weight gain and depress you. If necessary buy a basic neutral dark top and bottom in a larger size. Usually your jackets and cardigans will still fit if you are only up 5-10 pounds.

3. Wear a column of colors. That is a matching top and bottom. It creates an unbroken vertical line.

4. Be sure your bra is doing it's job. A low bustline makes you look heavier than you are.

5. Add a small shoulder pad. This will make your shoulders broader than your hips.

Are Your Clothes Tight?

Well, like most of you it's post Holiday diet and exercise time. Those who know me personally are always surprised that I diet. Of course I diet! How else do I stay slim and continue to fit into my wardrobe of beautiful Carlisle and Per Se investment pieces. My rule is once I reach or exceed my personal maximum weight, it's diet time. Actually I hate the word diet. It's really back to eating like I should all the time---Healthy.

So here is my favorite diet which has been around for sometime. The Fat Flush Diet by nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman. The first two weeks is a detox diet with no caffeine or alcohol (the hard part for me), no dairy, no carbohydrates except those in vegetables and fruit. You have warm lemon juice in the morning followed by pure cranberry juice with water an phylum (ground corn husk) in the morning and evening to cleanse your system. I get these at Trader Joes. The meals and snacks always keep hunger at bay. It simply means planning ahead to have the right ingredients in the house and even on the road if need be. I always drop about 5 pounds in 2 weeks, and I feel great. Then I ease into phase two which lets you reintroduce food categories one at a time and watch if it affects your weight. I discovered dairy slows down my weight loss. For others it could be wheat or corn, etc.

Of course I am pretty regimented about exercise. I alternate walking , biking, and following DVD's of exercises. It has to be part of your routine. I find driving to an exercise class just adds more time to the process of getting in a half or whole hour of exercise daily. Others need group motivation.

Holiday Makeup

This week I had my makeup done for a photo shoot by a professional makeup artist who I would like to recommend, Pamela Jeffries. While working with Pamela we discussed Holiday Party makeup looks. We both agreed that either you make the focal point your eyes or lips. So if you do the smoky eye look, then do a more natural lipstick or gloss. Conversely if you want to do bright red or fuchsia lips, then go light on the eye liner and shadow.

Shimmer is great for parties on the lids, cheeks. and even the bust line. Women with mature skin need to apply shimmer very lightly though. A touch on the center of the lid or just across the top of the cheek bone, as shimmer will emphasis wrinkles.

I will be doing smoky eyes at a black tie event this weekend. Basically this means that after doing a base or makeup primer and light shadow over my entire lid to brow area, I'll apply dark eyeshadow on my eyelids up to the crease. Some apply eyeliner both inside and outside your eyes. I do not like lining the inside of your eyes though, so I just do a dark eyeliner pencil on the top and bottom of my lashes and smug with a Q-tip. Pamela suggests topping the pencil liner with a liquid eyeliner for extra intensity. As a final touch I apply a thin line of the lid shadow below by lower eyeliner and blend with a Q-tip. Sensible Jewelry Gifts

Certainly during this economy jewelry sales overall have declined, yet jewelry is still selling. There are always occasions when nothing but jewelry marks a special events in one's life: engagements, anniversaries, significant birthdays, graduations, etc. In addition women are not just waiting to be gifted, but buying their own jewelry.

My advice to those building a jewelry wardrobe is similar to my advice regarding building a clothing wardrobe: begin with good classic basics. You should have earrings, a necklace, a bracelet and ring in your best base color: white gold or yellow gold. These pieces should work with the majority of your clothing wardrobe. They should look good together, but not be matching. A few diamonds that are not to flashy might be added to your basic metal. Often a necklace may become your signature piece, such as a chain with a gold coin perhaps. These classic pieces will most likely be built over time (often with not to subtle hints to husbands) before Christmas, an anniversary or a birthday. You may even eventually "upgrade" to replace a piece bought years ago.

After these basics are completed you may want to begin another jewelry acquistion plan. Perhaps it will be pearls or a certain colored gem that suits your coloring and wardrobe. As these are all somewhat planned sensible purchases that will be worn frequently for year and years, I personally do not see them as that extragant unless you have very limited discretionary income.

I also suggest buying from a respected jeweler who you can trust to sell you good quality and can handle any repairs needed over the years. Wardrobe Colors by the Month

In a recent article in the Wall Street Journal Christina Binkley wrote about Holiday attire and the short number of weeks we might wear something like a red velvet dress. I certainly have a few items that only get worn in December. For years I have hung out on my hall rack a 3/4 length red and green plaid Carlisle coat that I wear multiple times per week all through December. I think the red silk dress pictured here can be worn October through March and not simply December though.

I actually tend to go through my favorite colors to wear by the month. In October and November it's my orange tops. My base tends to be brown. My December it's naturally anything red often with black bottoms. Though I wear red accessories almost year round. In January-February I love wool sweaters and pants in winter white. By Spring I am into corals and aqua blue. The hot days of summer it's often bright lemon yellow or lime green cottons with crisp whites.

As I buy classics these seasonally rotated clothes are in my wardrobe for years. Though many pieces can be worn any time of year, they just cry out to be worn certain months especially.

All this is somewhat mirrored by my home decor. I rotate my accessories by the seasons. In January and February it's mirrors with crystal vases and bowls and white candles to pick up the weaker winter light. Come Spring it's flowers and bunnies. In Summer I display all my seashells.

Am I alone in the joy of expressing the flow of the year by the rotation of my clothes or household decor? Certainly retailers hope other women do the same!

What to wear to Business Holiday Parties

At this time of the year your company, your vendors, or your clients often have parties that you are invited to. It is a great time to form closer relationships with these groups, plus have some fun. Be careful not to get to carried away with the alcohol and embarrass your self though. This is a business event.

Since this is still business not a date night or evening with your husband, refrain from anything too sexy like plugging necklines. Can you hear the buzz from all the men if you do! This is not how you want them to remember you when you next meet for business.

The Thursday Nov. 12 issue of the Wall Street Journal had an article on bamboo fabric used in designer clothing. It is touted as an ecologically friendly textile. The downside is that toxic solvents are currently used to break the stems down. Hopefully this can be improved in the future.

Sweater Care

Now that we can finally wear sweaters in Southern California it's time to think about proper care. Though you may not be able to tell it, the cardigan pictured here is a cable knit. It should not be hung on a hanger both because of the weight and looseness of the knitting. Hanging will lead to the shoulders stretching out and the entire garment. "growing" or lengthening. Occasionally you may have a light-weight tightly woven knit sweater that can be hung on a padded or heavy hanger, but usually sweaters should lay flat.

Snags and pulls are another care issue with sweaters. Larger loose weaves are prone to being caught on protruding objects. Tight weave can easily be snagged, so watch that your jewelry and purse have no rough edges.

Moths love lunching on the food particles dropped on your sweater, even those particles you do not see. So dry clean them for sure at the end of the season, but also during the season as needed. You can even wrap your sweater up and place it in the freezer over night to kill any bugs or eggs that might be inside your favorite wool or cashmere pieces.

What is your color contrast level?

Most women know about seasonal colors or at least which colors look best on them. Have you ever considered what contrast level in a print works best for you? The model on the left has a medium contrast between her hair color and complexion. The dress is also medium contrast: beige and brown. This is one of the reasons this dress looks great on this model, the contrast levels agree. If the dress was black and white (the ultimate in high contrast), then someone with dark hair and a fair complexion would look especially striking because the again the contrast levels agree.

Contrast level is one of the items I note on my client's profile. It's a subtle element. Sometimes though a certain garment color and the styling of a garment will trump contrast level when making a purchase decision. Just become aware of your personal contrast level. Look at the prints in your closet. Are they low, medium or high contrast? Which do you feel best in?

Tights and Black Sheer Hosiery

Often women over 50 will tell me that a certain skirt in the Collection is too short for them. Yet my opinion is that with tights or dark hosiery you can wear a shorter skirt if you have good legs. Look at the short black skirt at the left. In this photo the model almost looks like she is wearing pants because the skirt, tights and shoes create one long look. Hot this season are tights with boots also. The model on the right is wearing a chiffon flowing skirt with sheer black hose. The hosiery definitely is the finishing touch to this elegant lady look. Bare legs just will not do here.

Feathery Fashions

Clothing Fit and Alterations

Can you buy your clothes off the rack and have them fit perfectly? Then you are the exception. You just happen to be the same size as that designer's fit model. A size eight dress can fit a variety of figure types who are basically a size 8 with tweaking. With a jacket or dress first fit your shoulders then the widest area of your upper torso. Is it your bust or hips? You want the garment to glide over these areas. Now if there is excess in the other areas, have it taken in. Check your sleeve length also. Is the jacket too long for your proportions? Even this can usually be altered an inch or two.

What I often notice from the rear is that a jacket is just tight enough over the hips that it is not falling straight down, but causes horizontal fold in the back around the waist area. From the front it makes you look thick in the middle. The jacket seams need to be let out over the hips. Sometimes I have recommended venting a jacket. That is removing the bottom stitching of the seam and creating a "V" vent.

Proper fit can make a less expensive purchase look more expensive. Conversely, an ill-fitted garment will look less than impressive if it has not been altered to fit your unique body type.

Professional Women and Hosiery

To wear or not to wear? I am often asked this question at my corporate trainings. The answer depends on your business culture and clientele. In some conservative cultures like the financial fields older executives, managers, and clients would expect hosiery to be part of the traditional attire package. Women wear hosiery and men wear socks with their suits.

This said, hosiery sales are down as the younger generation is going without hosiery. Personally I tend to go without hosiery in the summer especially, though never professionally. Once my legs loose their tan I still like how hosiery hides alot of the blemishes on my legs. Plus with certain outfits I need the body sculpting pant hose provide.

The Advantage of a Clothing Steamer

I have own a clothing steamer since I first began selling Carlisle 18 years ago. The shipments come in boxes from New York, and my steamer sits right next to my clothing delivery rack. I am a member of Toastmasters and frequently members have questions about their attire. Beyond buttoning your jacket when answering table topic or giving a speech, I offer these suggestions. What if you are giving a talk about your African safari, could you wear khaki or bring a safari hat. If your talk is about the economy or investing, this seems to call for a power suit. Think navy, black or grey suit. If your talk involves humor or a fun story, what about happy bright colors or accessories. For a man this could be his tie and for a woman her accessories.

I recently wore a very polished casual outfit for a professional training I gave at a very relaxed casual company. It really set the wrong tone from the moment I arrived.

Incredible Facial

I had the most incredible facial from Patty Bunch in Toluca Lake (Burbank). For one and a half hours I was pampered from head to toe literally. Patty worked through all the facial steps while her assistant massaged my legs, feet, arms and hands.

I have recommended Patty to my clients who needed their makeup done for special occassions. Patty is a professional makeup artist in the entertainment industry and has been nominated twice for an Emmy. When she is not on a set, Patty is at her charming bungalow in Toluca Lake doing both makeup and skin therapy.

During my session she had her facial steamer going as she cleansed and did two exfoliation treatments. Then she gave me a oxygen treatment to increase my collegen. Lastly, she gave me a deep pore masque. My skin was radiant afterwards.

Yes, linen wrinkles

I just returned from Hawaii where I wore both a very old Ellen Fisher linen blouse that I love and a new pair of Tommy Bahama linen white shorts. Now many women and men will not even consider wearing linen in the summer because it wrinkles. The rumbled look of linen is part of the summer look though. I never iron my linens to a crisp finish. Plus I like how linen gets softer with washing.

Linen is cool, absorbent and lint free. It also holds a dye very well. Linen is 2-3 times stronger than cotton and remarkably durable. Ramses II who died in 1258 BC over 3000 years ago was wrapped in linen and the fabric had not decayed when his body was discovered.

Why Wear A Hat

There are many reasons to wear at hat.

The number one reason to wear a hat is sun protection. Many hats state that they have UV protection, but you'll at least want one that is closely woven to prevent rays from penetrating. I like ones with broad brims that shade my neck. Really broad brims even protect my shoulders when sunbathing. If you will be hiking or doing an active outdoor activity consider one that ties around the chin. Your hat will not only protect your skin, but keep your hair from sun damage and dryness.

The other great reason is glamour. Of course we've admired extravagant hats at events like the Kentucky Derby, but even a simple hat can add glamour to any woman's outfit. On a bad hair day I wear a hat, and I get all these compliments. I have to control myself not to say, "Thank you but actually I did not have time to style my hair today".

Lastly, I hear women say I do not look good in hats. My response is you simply have not found the style that best suits you. Just start trying them on.

Do you own a pair of pants or a skirt that relates to your hair color? When a blond wears biege pants or a brunette wears a dark brown skirt, they are repeating a color and the effect is always pleasing. Almost any complimentary color on top will also just naturally work.

Another version of repeating a color is to wear an accessory near your face that repeats the color of your pant or skirt. For instance you are wearing a casual blue top with white pants. Now add a touch of white in your necklace such as mother of pearl disk on a white cord.

Beware of shopping sales without a plan. Review your wardrobe first to determine what you need. Perhaps you need some tops with color to brighten your basic neutrals, or your basic black pants or your better jeans need replacing. Just having a purpose when you go through those sales racks helps you zip through them. Also beware of buying one piece that you love hoping to find something to go with it. You know what will happen, right!

A certain amount of spontaneity is also called for though. If you see just the right style and color that suits your personal style, go for it. When you really need something special in the future, you will not be out there at the last minute trying to find it.

The Professional Woman's Image vs. Sexy Messages

Gone are the days when women tried to dress like men in the work place. You can certainly dress like a woman, but this does not mean sexy. Where do you want the attention to be when conducting business? On what you have to say and do, right. Therefore avoid any tops that are low cut, tight or sheer. Watch you skirt length and remember that when you sit down it goes up another 2 inches (slits also rise). Avoid long nails that look like they would impede doing work. Watch out for hairstyles that cover your partially eyes. Avoid stiletto heels that not only look too sexy, but affect the way you walk.

What not to economize on

Please do not economize on your skin care. You will regret it years later when this whole mess is over. At the minimum cleanse with a PH balanced product, use a daytime moisturizer with sunscreen and a good night cream. Now I happen to sell a product I researched and love, Arbonne Swiss formulated skin care. But I also like Dermalogica. Both companies use botanically based ingredients, like natural oil. Do avoid mineral oil. Lots of lines use this cheap oil which is often given other names on the list of ingredients. Mineral oil sits on the top of your skin. Now this is great to prevent diaper rash and mineral oil (a petroleum based product) is the main ingredient in baby oil. It act as a barrier to the acid in urine penetrating the skin. You want a oil that goes into your skin. This is what I like about Arbonne it selects only natural oils and uses their nanosphere patent to assure that the product does penetrate the skin to provide the benefits that reduce aging.

The Frugal Wardrobe

How does one keep their wardrobe "up to date" while still watching the budget? By planning.

What are the neutral colors you look best in? Is it black and gray, or brown and beige. If it's black do you have columns of this color? That is tops and bottoms in the same color. Do you have your column in both warm and cold weather pieces, dressy and casual? Do you have great accessories in these colors. This is you base upon you can have lots of fun. Since you wear these pieces frequently replace them as necessary and buy the best quality your budget allows.

Over your base you can layer color or even just go monotone. When the new trends are out for a season you can simply add a few pieces like a great colored handbag, a fun belt, the latest costume jewelry, a scarf with the colors that look great next to your face.

Most important is review your wardrobe before you shop and make a list of what you could use to either maintain it or update.

Looking Great While Cooking the Thanksgiving Feast

Whether you are the host or guest-helper on Thanksgiving Day, an essential is a good apron. In fact as a host who hopes guests will pitch in have extra clean aprons available.
